The year 2020 will always be remembered globally as a chaotic year because of COVID-19, but this chaos gave way to a digital explosion in which the world discovered the massive potential of technology to assist in doing many tasks in a faster, more agile and more productive way.

With this landscape and precursor to 2021, this year many emerging technologies and many that have been around for several years, will continue their process towards an absolute consolidation.

We see big trends, like enterprise mobility, low code/no code, adoption of containers and microservices, that will continue to transform the application development management (ADM) space. As the demands increase for  agility, flexibility, speed and integration, these technologies and tools will become exceedingly relevant for creating solutions that respond accordingly.

Here’s a snapshot of 3 ADM trends organizations should embrace to move forward with speed and fluidity:

The rise of enterprise mobility

Organizations have been forced to understand the importance of a mobility strategy and today it represents a critical business requirement for applications. Enterprises will continue to focus on getting first-in-class solutions to mobilize and enhance business applications on various mobile platforms, securely, quickly, easily, with round-the-clock availability and a better user experience.

Low code, no code, as a standard first step

With the continued impact by the pandemic, companies depend even more heavily on agile low-code, no-code software development platforms to be able to deploy business critical solutions and expand their digital channels. Low code, no code has been able to prove its value; it is no longer an emerging trend but rather a recognized tool with proven results in the enterprise, delivering new applications for organizations at record times. These achievements set a new benchmark to the future of application development and positions low code, no code as a standard first step. In fact, industry analysts and advisors, like Gartner and Forrester, predict that 75% of all application development will soon be built on low-code platforms.

Adoption of Containers and Microservices

As the market continues to change and more and more projects require having greater scalability, improved security, speed, efficiency and agility, the demand for adopting containers and microservices will continue to increase. Containerization and cloud-based microservices architecture are a perfect fit for such projects.

According to Gartner, By 2023, more than 75% of global organizations will be running more than two containerized applications. The combination of containers with microservices contributes to improved software delivery and enables quicker speed to market, helping businesses staying ahead of the curve and meet the demands of the rapidly changing market.

Application Outsourcing will continue to evolve, and both enterprise consumers and services providers must adopt and adapt new agile development practices to stay in the game. The integration of traditional application development and maintenance services augmented by emerging methodologies, tools, and collaborative frameworks, is the way to go to meet the increasing need for speed, competitivity, and business resiliency.
